This style is called Bantu knots, youtube has a flood of videos for this hairstyle here's one of them. You coil your hair when its wet and sleep with it, when you wake up and unravel the coils, you'll have beautiful curls.

  • How can you keep wet african american hair from getting frizzy and poofy?

I have regular african american hair and i cant stand it, the only thing thats gooda about it is that after i wash it, it gets perfectly crimpy and it looks really pretty i wish that I could keep it like that but if i let it air dry it'll like turn into an afro. Is their any way to keep my cute wavy look nice without it getting frizzy and poofy? Like are their any products available that work, keep in mind that i have regular african american hair. pleasee help me.How can you keep wet african american hair from getting frizzy and poofy?
I have tried to achieve that look many times over the summer. I have a relaxer and I used gel and Smooth n Shine Polishing spray. Eventually from me wetting my hair so much to keep that look it eventually started to break and my scalp became so dry. So, be careful what people suggest. Just a suggestion, as an alternative you can try to get a wave from like Gold n Hot (ceramic is less damaging to the hair) or even a crimpler. Just make sure you apply some heat protectant (like Motions Heat Protector or Aveda Brilliant Damage Control). Good luck! How can you keep wet african american hair from getting frizzy and poofy?
Try Let's Jam Straightening cream. It works for me. all you do is after you wash your hair apply a generous amount of the product and you can blow dry or air dry. I don't know how thick your hair is but if you have thick hair it will releive some frizziness but not all.
add jell or add some braids to your hair styles and tie it up at night
use a deep leave in moisturizer like Neutragena Triple moisture, and use some curly pudding. Do a search for it, because I don't know the brand name. I have seen others results, but I have not tried it myself.

My hair is also crimpy-like while wet, but frizzy when dry. I just accept the frizzyness, and I LOVE MY HAIR.
John Freda makes a couple of products that will kind of help but it will NOT give you the exact result you are thinking of. He has a Hair Serum that you put in your hair while wet to help cut down on frizziness get the extra strength one. And he has a Curl spray to help keep hair curly. I have used them both and i have African American Hair that is not mixed with anything else. I use it when I don't want to put heat on my hair. BUT I have a relaxer too so if your hair is natural I don't know how it will work
You could always shave it off. Sinead O'Connor looked great.

What's the best deep conditioner to use for african american hair?

To help it grow? Would getting a deep conditioner twice / week help also? What's the best deep conditioner to use for african american hair?
what works for one person's hair may not work for yours. i use organic root stimulator's replenshing conditioner. if it's a protein deep conditioner it can make your hair brittle if you use it too often. a moisturizing deep conditioner can be used as much as you needed. What's the best deep conditioner to use for african american hair?
pantene deep conditioner specially made for women of color. You can find it in cvs.

What relaxers make african american hair like other people?

I want it for my birthdayWhat relaxers make african american hair like other people?
Is this your first relaxer? You should go to a hair salon and let them apply it. However if you INSIST on doing it at home Dr. Miracles Has a great relaxer system (that includes a hair potion that makes your hair feel AMAZING)

But please go to the salon... ESPECIALLY if its the first relaxer.

And just a side not you can achieve the LOOK of a relaxer by just getting your hair pressed. That way you don't have to make such a drastic chemical change... And you might miss your natural hair :-)What relaxers make african american hair like other people?
What do you mean like other peoples'? Dr. Miracles is ';good'; in a sense of, it relaxes hair well, however it isn't healthy for your scalp or hair (and WILL cause some degree of damage).

Just get a chi straightener or a sedu for your birthday instead, not only is it better for your hair, but you'll be abe to get the look of relaxed hair without the chemical change (that ruins hair), and you can do it at home without having to go to the salon.

What do you mean ';like other people';?

Do you mean make the hair straight, curly, wavy?

OTHER PEOPLE consists of many different OTHER PEOPLE with different types and/or grades of hair. Even other african americans have different types/grades of hair.

What's the fastest way to get African American hair to grow?

Well my friends daughter is 11, She has medium hair her hair is so nice and thick it's a good length. But her hair is breaking off like little pieces of hair coming off. What should her mother do? I don't want her hair to fall out. Plus how can i get her hair to grow longer? What's the fastest way to get African American hair to grow?
Im going to repost an answer I used on another question which asked the same thing:

every black girl has gone through the phase were the hair will not grow past her shoulders. When I relaxed my hair I used http://www.growafrohairlong.com/ and followed her regimen for washing and maintaining hair and my hair grew to bra-strap length. I say grew (past tense) because I stopped getting relaxers and am now going natural so I've been trimming my hair to get rid of the relaxed ends.

The basic regimen was once a week:

    pre-poo (optional)

    wash

    deep condition

    leave in/moisturize

    air dry

    oil scalp

    style (low manipulation)

    Products I would recommend are:

    Creme of nature shampoo

Pantene Relaxed and Natural Hair Mask (conditioner)

    Neutroena Triple Moisture (conditioner)

Aphogee 2min reconstructor (protein conditioner, to be done every 8-12wks.)

    other:

-stretch your relaxer longer than the recommended 6wks to avoid over processing and breakage.

-keep your hair properly moisturized and up off your shoulders to avoid split ends and breakage.

-try not to manipulate the hair to much, try low manipulation hair styles like buns, twists, and/or braids.

-baggy the ends to keep them moisturized

-trim every 4-5 months, healthy hair can go this long w/o trim. Trimming every 6 weeks will just make your hair shorter. Hair only grows .5 inches per month.

    -stay away from heat appliances

-air dry as much as possible

    -moisture, moisture, and more moisture

-sleep on satin pillow case or cover w/ satin/silk bonnet

    -wide tooth comb

    -no brushing

-stop wrapping the hair, that is just excessive combing and will cause more unessecary breakage.

    *edit*

that is probably why her hair is breaking, you might want to lay off the pressing. If your applying heat to already damaged hair than it is now wonder it is breaking off. Just to be sure it is not shed hair look at the hair that is coming off. If you see a white/clearish bulb attatched to either end of the strand of hair than it is nothing to worry about, it is shed hair. A healthy head of hair will shed around a hundred hairs a day, even more in certain seasons of the year. If there is not bulb on the end than yes, it is just breakage.

I can help you but I need more information. Is this little girls hair in it's natural state, or is it chemcially straightened (or relaxed).

    Excessive use of relaxers

    Excessive use of heat styling

Not enough moisture (in the form of leave ins or deep conditioners)

...can all cause breakage. Unfortunately, many african americans (myself included) have all three of these issues.

When I was young I kept my braided in singles. It was expensive, but low maintenence and help my hair grow.
keep it washed, greased, and braided. Use only natural shampoos, other wise it won't repair itself. Keeping it washed and braided will allow the hair to repair itself and grow.
Don't put any heat or perms in her hair

trem her ends every 4-6 months

    do a deep conditioner

use the Pantene relaxed and natureal shampoo

    Use a leave in conditioner
    pantene beautiful lengths..

    you can get it anywhere

and try not to apply alot of heat to the hair that could be the problem!

    good luck!

What's the best way to flat iron natural african american hair?

I've been wearing my hair naturally, it's very strong and healthy. Not brittle and dry. I want to know how to flat iron my hair without it being weighed down by grease or wax. What's the best way to flat iron natural african american hair?
You definitely want to use a heat protectant to keep your hair strong and healthy. You can also use a creme press in addiction to the heat protectant to help straighten and moisturize the hair. After washing, blow dry your hair with the comb attachment. Then take your flat iron and straighten in small sections. And I'd definitely opt for a flat iron with ceramic plats. I have one that I bought at Sally's for under $25 and it's nevery led me astray. You can also get an electrical hot comb at beauty supply stores. My preference was for the hot comb, but YMMV.What's the best way to flat iron natural african american hair?
Get a ceramic flat iron :

First wash your air and put them in rollers, roller set ur hair to get a more bouncy look. Dont put in setting lotion because it will make it hard.

Then dry ur hair underneath a hair dryer not a blow dryer.

Then take the rollers out and use the ceramic flat iron and flatten it and use grease since u have natural hair
just flat iron it like regular...and when you straighten it you need to use a parting comb...and put it rght below the straighter when you do...sry..I really dont know who to explain it
with the most awesome flat iron i have ever seen. It is sold on ebay but is a little costy. It is called Maxi-Glide
