How to prevent hair breakage in African American hair?

I'm trying to grow my hair longer and healthier. I wash and deep condition and use a hot oil treatment every 1 to 2 weeks, but i still experience a lot of breakage. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions? How to prevent hair breakage in African American hair?
My hair breaks off pretty easily so I try not to use heat on my hair(flat irons, curling irons) Wrapping it at nights also helps ALOT. Use a satin or silk scarf to tie it down. Also be sure to oil/grease your scalp alot. And get your ends trimmed fairly often, at least after a relaxer. If your ends are pretty bad, don't be afraid to cut a couple inches off. It'll grow back healthier! Your hair will continue to break off other wise. If that doesnt work, try going to the salon every couple or weeks or so to get your hair treated.

For me, my hair grows when it's braided. I'll get a trim and good conditioning, and get some micro braids. When I take them down after a few months, I've made some progress!! GOOD LUCKHow to prevent hair breakage in African American hair?
Do you relax your hair? I did that (part black) and it ruined my lock, wavy hair. I ended up having to cut it off (and I know it's hard because mine grows fast but I know for some African Americans, it doesn't) and pretty much starting from scratch. Since you might still want to do it, however, the best thing to do is at least tend to your ends. Don't straighten as often and don't do hot oil as much - it's not as effective as it is made out to be. Use leave in conditioners to keep moisture locked in, don't wash your hair as often (do it like three times a week instead of everyday) and keep your hair down more often as a means of letting it breathe. Pinning it up or putting it in a ponytail constricts it and causes breakage all around your hair follicles.
First, you shouldn't need to use a deep condition and hot oil treatment every 1-2 weeks. At most, you should deep condition your hair whenever you go to get a perm or 5-6 weeks. And the same goes for a hot oil treatment. I would say that you probably have a lot of split ends and need a cut. Find a good stylist that knows how to handle african american/black hair. If you do not have a stylist and are unsure where to begin, just find the listing of salons in your area whether it be from the yellow pages or online and just ask them. Most stylists will be pretty honest on whether or not they are used to working with black hair. After you find your stylist, say that you just want your hair to be healthy and explain what you have been doing to your hair. Don't worry about how much they cut because if they are experienced enough, they will know how much to cut to get your hair back to a healthy state. Once the stylist is finished, ask them about how to maintain your now healthy hair. For the most part, the stylist may say that you will not just need to come in every month or every time you get a perm to also get a trim. From what you wrote, all I can say you need is to stop deep conditioning every 1-2 weeks, go to a stylist, get a good cut, and maintain your now healthy hair with frequent trims. I also recommend that once you find a good stylist, stick with that one. If you can't, ask them to recommend someone in an area you prefer. Believe me, it may seem like a lot. But you will be so grateful and estatic that all of this will result in you having healthier hair. You will not only feel better, but you will get more compliments on your new shorter healtier hair than of you were to keep it 'long' but filled with split ends and dry. Healthier hair grows better than unhealthy hair because and growth in unhealthy hair breaks off. Stick with a good stylist and you will see that you end up with 'fabulous hair'!
my best advice would be to use the Relaxed and Natural collection from pantene pro-v. its really rich with vitamins and oils to keep hair from breakage. i would continue with the hot oil treatments. they work well. also, Miss Jessies products for hair are great! they are so light and they really help hair. also, if you use a hair straightener every day, i would cut back on using it. hope that helps!
I would say not to use chemicals on your hair. Why don't you go for some home remedies. Egg whites, lemon juice, oil massages, reducing stress and diet changes can reduce hair fall and make it healthier. You can find more cheap, effective and natural home remedies for hair loss as well as for healthy hair at http://www.wellnesstalk.org/hairfall.htm鈥?/a>

CUTT CUTT
Maybe it is in your diet and vitamins that are needed.
Cut it Off.
dont flat iron it or straighten it and put weird products in your hair
Your hair isn't a particular race. It's hair. Produced by particular genetics.

Meaning, I would've been ok with ';African'; hair, but there's no such thing as ';American'; hair...

Knock that off, and cut it off.
Lay off the weaves and all the straigtening and all the cool yet damaging hair styles.
