Hi, Im african american. I have thick coarse hair that dries out quick and splits at the end. I was trying the perm Olive Oil but it wont work in my head anymore. What should I do? What should I try? Should I try another perm? How can I make my African American hair grow longer?
Hi,
I understand your frustration. I saw one of the other answer that said to only relax every 3-4 months. If your hair is like mine. I can't stretch more than 10 weeks without seeing breakage. If you still want to relax, I would suggest you relax every 8-12 weeks depending on how much new growth you get and how healthy your hair is. You need to get a trim and start fresh. Try not to use heat so much. There is alot that you can do, and its alot to say so i have a site that I love. Its a black haircare forum. You can ask many questions and get advice on many different things. From the right relaxer, essential oils for hair growth, the right shampoos.
The site is:

Ooh, avoid using mineral oil, and petrolatum. These products are detrimental to hair growth. It clogs your pores of your scalp. DO NOT USE products that have them. Unfortunately alot of products geared towards african americans have these ingredientsHow can I make my African American hair grow longer?
First of all, relaxing it is not helping it it's hurting it. That's what you need to know. You need to only relax your hair every 3 to 4 months and that would help a lot.
The Organic Root Stimulator olive oil relaxer is good, but really to help your hair you need to stop doing relaxers at home and go to a professional. The best BEST relaxer is Mizani. It's really good and you can't even buy it in a pack at the store, you need a beautician's license to even buy it.
Second of all, you need to take supplements and eat the right things. The best hair vitamins are the VITASTRAND ones by Mikal Clay. Make sure that you are eating a lot of leafy greens, pour a little olive oil on your salad to help with shiny hair, and drinking at least 64 oz. of water a day.
Plus I wear my hair in a sew in weave, so I get to flaunt my 14-inch fake hair while my natural hair is growing like crazy underneath... :)
Good luck!
I don't have a perm but i would suggest to :
-go to a Professional who works with african american hair
-use natural hair products without the damaging man made ingredients
- rub scalp everyday
- Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner
-get ends trimmed regularly
- use natural oil on your ends
Hope I Helped :)
