How can you get African American hair to grow?

I have thick African American hair that is not relaxed, full of new growth and it is just a few inches past my shoulders but i want it to grow a bit past my chest. Is there any type of great method to do this. Well, I'm a little skeptical about certain chemicals and ';miracle and quick fix'; products, and I don't want those things to screw up my hair even more. What can I do to keep my hair looking great but also long and free-flowing. Also any hairdressers, please feel free to help me. Thanks! How can you get African American hair to grow?
While it is true that hair is dead protein and that hair growth is hereditary..there are methods you can do to produce hair growth. The truth is that while HAIR is ';dead'; the SCALP is not. In order to produce hair growth, the scalp must be stimulated and stimulation of the scalp using essential oils, herbs, carrier oils, and vitamins is not only better in improving your hair but will also help your scalp from any fungal disorders and issues you may have. In other words, natural remedies for the hair are just as effective as green tea and other herbs that have actually been proven to behoove the body. There ar no ';miracle'; formulas that can cause you to have extreme hair growth, but with time and proper maintenance and a consistent hair regimen, you CAN improve your hair as well as grow longer tresses. Currently I have had great results with a natural African American hair care line called Mineral Indulgence. I am a cosmetologist and herbalist so I do know quite a bit in regard to what herbs will stimulate the scalp...and the Mineral Indulgence Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment, Napptural Sulfate Free Shampoo, Kiwi Coconut Hair Smoothie, and Herbal Scalp Serum have improved the state of my natural hair dramatically and I have also noticed that my hair has become thicker as well as longer.

You cannot simply determine the rate of your hair growth by taking notice of how long your relatives hair is, by the way. For instance, if you have inherited your mother's hair, but her hair is NOT growing to it's longest form...than it would not be wise to use her as a way to determine how long your hair will get. Use all natural products from now on and refrain from using commercial products or ones sold in stores. Figure out what type hair you have. Is it type 3a or type 4b? Do research on what certain essential oils will do for hair.

Good Luck, and feel free to email me if you have any questions!

whoa. Me :) is totally wrong. Actually, Onlimee is right. Nothing can make your hair grow. University of Michigan has conducted tests on this myth and like onlimee said, it's proven that hair grows based on DNA and nothing else.
ahmm..you can try some medicine for hair growth..but choose the affective one and safe one..
moisture, moisture, moisture...water based though. check out cathy howse's book, it's helped me big time.
OnliiMe: The sites that you listed as ';proof'; only refutes the myths that hair can grow if you cut it. It does NOT refute whether scalp stimulation can produce hair growth. Also, the site is not cannon...it's not a medical site nor is it scientific one. You also can't look at your mom's or grandmother's hair to determine if you r hair will grow a certain length. My mother had a ring worm on her scalp that prevented it from growing to it's full capabilities. Because of this he hair was ear length. I have a grandmother who used relaxers and baby oil on her hair, which made it break off really badly. MY hair comes down to my shoulders and is healthy because I use shea butters and natural products on it. I was able to combat ring worms because I used tea tree oil which has been used for ions to get rid of fungus problems and there are MANY statistics showing the benefits that certain herbs and essential oils can have on the scalp/hair (some being hair growth).

Then what you said was inaccurate. You said that a relative like your mother or grandmother's hair has to be long in order for a person's hair to be long.....MY hair is long and my relatives hair is NOT. BTW, baby oil is the same as mineral oil...it is a common product in most hair products, as well as relaxers. You don't know what you are talking about.
ok well in june i got 2 inches cut off my hair because it was so damaged. i was really upset so my mom got me some doo gro anti thinning growth lotion. i've been using it ever since and my hair is back to it's normal length! i'm going to continue to use it. my mom used it a year ago and she had amazing growth in less than a year! lol i'm hoping it works that way for me. i have researched how to grow african american hair too and i found out that you have to have a good balanced diet. you should eat leafy green veggies, fruits, nuts, grains, and seeds. i've also head that beauty 4 ashes hair products work wonders so i'm going to try that as well. to really get your hair to grow try not to mess with it so much. ease up on the combing and brushing and pulling it into tight styles. that just ends up breaking the hair off. also try some hot oil treatments =]

hope i helped!
Honestly? You can't. It has been proven time and time again that absolutely NOTHING can MAKE hair grow. It's based solely on genetics. Many people tell you to wrap it at night, deep condition, get it trimmed every 2 weeks..no, no, no! Hair only grows about 0.5 inches a month so trimming it every 2 weeks is a waste. You'd be cutting you're ACTUAL hair...not any ';split ends';. Hair is neither healthy nor unhealthy..why? because it's dead. if it were alive, it'd be painful to get our hair cut, and it's not. Sorry to say that nothing can make it grow. SOMEBODY in your family has to have long hair for YOUR hair to get long...particularly a grandmother or a mother. sorry.

im not trying to be rude or discouraging..but you can either go based on ppl's stories, or you can go based on science and actual conducted tests. you can look it up for yourself too.
