How To Get My African American Hair Healthy?

I'm African-American and I have really horrible hair. Ever since I've had it relaxed, it's become dry and brittle. The ends are splitting all the time. My scalp itches and I have lots of dandruff. I was wondering if there was any way to relax my hair and get it to a healthy state. So can anyone give me some tips as well as some products to get my nice hair back? I believe that having long healthy hair is a privilege NOT a right (especially for those with coarse, kinky, fragile, or chemically treated hair). It takes time, effort, and commitment. Also you must educate yourself and learn about what your hair does and doesn't like.

There are no miracle products that are going to solve your problem. What will are time, patience, and Tender Love %26amp; Care (TLC).

Here is a list of hair No No's or Don'ts that are probably preventing you from growing your hair to the length and health you want:

- Improper use of chemicals: The most common problem here is over processing. (Your relaxer is left on too long or the formula is too strong) You should make sure you are using the proper strength for your hair texture and that only new (growth) un-relaxed hair is serviced. A relaxer should be thoroughly rinsed out, shampooed with a Neutralizing (Shampoo) 2-3 x, and then deep conditioned with a moisturizing/strengthening treatment. EVERY TIME!!!

- Too much direct heat: If you use any type of heat appliance (flat iron, curling iron, blow dryer) more than once a week then your hair probably suffers from heat damage. Excessive heat causes dryness, breakage, split ends, and even hair thinning.

-Not enough conditioning and moisture: Chemically treated hair should be conditioned at least once a week. You need to rotate between a moisturizing treatment and a protein/strengthening treatment. Make sure to use a leave in to add even more moisture. Also lightly moisturize hair and ends at least once a day with a daily hair cream (Focus on ends). You can seal with oil/serum if you wish.

-Too much manipulation: Combing, brushing, and styling hair too often and too harshly will cause unnecessary breakage and shedding. Invest in a Wide tooth seamless comb and a soft boar bristle brush. Limit hair combing to 1-2x a week and only use a brush when needed to smooth edges. Also hair should be protected at night with a silk/satin scarf, bonnet, or pillow case. (Or the above)

-Dirty hair: A clean scalp and hair are important for healthy long hair. Product build up deprives hair of moisture and the scalp of oxygen. Dirty hair will stunt growth and cause hair dryness and eventually breakage. Wash and deep condition your hair 1-2x a week. Some can tolerate washing more often or waiting longer. It’s all about knowing YOUR hair.

Your hair needs plenty of moisture and protein. Trim your ends, and keep them protected by wearing protective styles such as buns, pin-ups. I like Aphogee Products. You need to deep condition your hair as well as use leave in condition. After conditioning your hair add oil to hair especially ends to seal in the moisture. Try eating healthy and drinking plenty of water, take care of your hair from the inside as well as the outside. Try using heat less often, air dry, pin curl or roller set instead of blow drying or using curling iron, if this is impossible for you, buy a heat protectant like MegaSilk to use on hair before using heat. You can also take vitamin B or multivitamins, and Biotin. I use tea tree, carrot and Vitamin E oils. For the itchy scalp try shampoo by Dr. Miracle's line of product, or even DooGro products. Don't scratch your scalp use the ball of fingertips to massage or apply oil. Also make sure fingernails are filed before washing hair or running your fingers thru hair, split nails, hang nails can cause breakage to hair. There are lots of site where women discuss products and exchange information. Google Black Hair Care Forum.
Go to a high-end salon that carries a brand called ';Kerastase.'; (Pronounced Care-uh-stoss) They have in-salon treatments that are pricey, but they will prevent your hair from breaking. It is amazing. A stylist can give you a treatment called Vita Cemont (probably around $35-$40). You can purchase the at home maintenance kit. (I'm not sure how much this is.) This will give you instant results. It is more than just a protein treatment, it is the best thing in the world for your hair that other brands cannot even compare to. I know that your hair is very important so don't allow it to break! Sorry I don't have an answer for the relaxer. I do know that they shouldn't pull relaxer through your already relaxed hair. Is your hair color treated? Maybe they used the wrong kind of relaxer for you or kept it on too long. Did they use a neutralizing shampoo? As for the dry, itchy scalp, I would use a brand called ';Renee Furterer'; found at nicer salons or at Sephora. I think the ';Okara'; shampoo would be good for you, but double check what it says on the bottle. Or try the neutragina shampoo found at Longs or Walgreens. My friend who has psoriasis (a hereditary condition which causes dry, flaking, itchy skin) says this works very well for her. Good luck with everything.
I got tired of my perm and went natural. Best decision I made regarding my hair and now my hair is stronger, thicker, and it's not breaking off. The perm might be messing up your hair. Go to a licensed professional for advice to get your hair back on the right track. I'd say if you do it yourself then wash and conditioner at least once a week along with a moisturizing or anti-breakage deep conditioner and do a protein treatment once a month. Too much protein can make your hair fall out if it's not balanced properly with moisture (which you're not getting), so don't over do it on the protein. Always use a leave-in conditioner after you wash and use a daily moisturizer every day. Don't use grease because it clogs your pores and hampers hair growth. Instead use a light hair condiitoner to condition your scalp or use oil to oil it. Hair grease and hair conditioner/oils are NOT the same. Make sure you keep your hair and scalp very moisturized. Whatever you do don't use grease.

You might want to consider going back natural. http://www.motowngirl.com
First of all, go to a stylist and have him/her cut off your split ends. If they don't get cut, your hair will keep breaking. Then, get a deep conditioner. You will have to continue this every month along with a hot oil treatment. I recommend that you stop using grease because it clogs your pores and slows hair growth. You should also try Dr. Miracles and when you do start getting perms again, start off with kiddie perms because they will do less damage to your hair. good luck
the relaxer is not the right answer. The answer is to go natural: cut the split ends, wash every week, use pantene (gold bottle products) (especially) moisturizer instead of grease, and twist your hair while it's wet and put the moisturizer in it and oil. NO HEAT
There is aproduct called PERm Repair that comes in a white tube with pink stripes that is pretty good. Also, DOO GROW has an oil that thickens your hair and moisturizes and keeps it from beig ';thirsty';. All DOO GROW products are good. Good Luck!!
Get as many Dr. Miracle brand products you can get a hold of!! Then try wrapping your hair with a satin scarf!! Make sure its satin and not cotton, because cotton sucks the natural oils out of your hair!!
well your hair is hard to work with because its very thick.

so you can buy some like really special conditioner from fantastic SAMS.
ok everyone hair is similar in many ways yet has a lot of texture difference. In other words what works for me may not work for you. But heres some tips

1. Moisturize your hair daily. Because of our ethnicity our hair gets dry easily which leads to breakage. I like B%26amp;B castrol oil. and pantene Pro-V moisturizer. If you dont like the mushy feeling on your hands just spray your scalp with some Olive oil sheen.

2. Wash your hair at least once a week. Use products with keratin and whey. I like Aphogee hair line. Theres others you can try like Motions or TBC.

3.CONDITIONER is your best friend. You HAVE to use conditioner after you shampoo. For some reason it keeps our hair really soft and healthy and depending on your products it adds proteins to your hair.Remember to rinse with cold water so the conditioner can coat your strands.

4. Leave in conditioner is a must.MASSAGE YOUR SCALP. this helps stimulate your blood flow in your scalp. Also bring out those natural oils your scalp produces. Don't forget to get a deep conditioner once in a while.(like every other week)

5. Trim your split ends every six to eight weeks.

6. Wrap your hair in a silk scarf every night. Add a little oil sheen to keep it moisturized during the night.

7. Only relax your hair every six weeks and when you do, only do your roots (touch ups) going over parts that are already relaxed can cause hair breakage..splitting..damage...etc..After six or seven months you can relax your whole head.

8.Drink water

(so thats it. Massage scalp/shampoo weekly/moisturize/trim/deep conditon/perm roots only until six months/ drink plenty of water)
Why does African American hair need relaxation?

Tell him to stop stressing out !!

eat soul food just like the rest of your people!
